MUMBAI: The city continued to reel under heavy rains on Sunday, with several neighbourhoods recording triple-digit rainfall in the 24 hours ending 8.30 am.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has retained its orange alert for Mumbai and Thane through August 19, warning of heavy to very heavy showers at isolated places. A yellow alert has been issued for August 20.
The Santacruz observatory logged 85 mm of rainfall, while Colaba recorded 55 mm. Automatic weather stations highlighted sharp variations: in south Mumbai, Fort received 134 mm, Cotton Green 145 mm, Grant Road 121 mm, and Lower Parel 129 mm.
Eastern suburbs saw similar downpours — Parel and Vikhroli both recorded 134–135 mm, Bhandup 135 mm, and Ghatkopar 124 mm. In the western suburbs, Kandivli reported 150 mm, Borivli 92 mm, while Dahisar topped with 188 mm.
With this, seasonal rainfall has crossed 1,000 mm at both IMD observatories: Colaba (1,257 mm) and Santacruz (1,764 mm).
Water stock in the seven lakes supplying Mumbai stood at 93.2%, compared to 83.45% on the same date last year. Tulsi lake is at 100% capacity, followed by Tansa (98.45%), Middle Vaitarna (97.17%), Vihar (89.92%), Bhatsa (89.23%), Modak Sagar (87.28%) and Upper Vaitarna (86.48%).
