MUMBAI: A 20-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly stealing a bag containing Rs 7.77 lakh that was inadvertently left behind by a senior citizen on a local train.
The incident took place when the elderly commuter from Kandivli boarded a Churchgate-bound fast train at Ram Mandir station. He intended to alight at Charni Road but was caught off guard when a mid-journey announcement informed passengers that the train would not halt there. In a rush, he disembarked at Mumbai Central—only to realize later that he had left his bag behind in the compartment.
He immediately took another train to Churchgate and searched the same compartment, but the bag was missing. The victim then lodged a theft complaint with the railway police.
The Railway Police Crime Branch reviewed CCTV footage from multiple stations and identified the suspect as Shivkumar Maurya, a resident of Vasai. He was arrested on May 29. So far, officers have managed to recover Rs 6.52 lakh from him.
The investigation was led by senior inspector Vijay Khedkar, inspector Rohit Sawant, and assistant inspector Abhijeet Tailor.
