LUCKNOW: Police on Friday arrested a resident doctor of King George’s Medical University (KGMU) accused of repeatedly raping a junior colleague on the pretext of marriage, forcing her to undergo an abortion, and coercing her into religious conversion.

The accused, Rameezuddin alias Rameez (31), was apprehended near the city railway station by a joint team of the West Lucknow surveillance unit and Chowk police. He had been absconding since December 23, after a case was registered based on the survivor’s complaint.

Earlier in the day, KGMU recommended his termination after its Internal Complaints Committee found him guilty of emotional, mental and physical harassment. Vice-Chancellor Soniya Nityanand said the university has forwarded its recommendation to the Directorate General of Medical Education for further action. She added that the doctor was suspended on December 22 and barred from entering the KGMU campus.

Police said an FIR has been registered under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for rape, causing miscarriage and marriage by deceit, along with provisions of the Uttar Pradesh Prohibition of Unlawful Religious Conversion Act, 2021.

Panel to probe conversion allegations

KGMU has also constituted a seven-member fact-finding committee, chaired by Professor K K Singh, to investigate allegations of forced conversion attempts and extremist activities on the campus. The panel, which includes former DGP Bhavesh, is expected to submit its report within 10 days.
