Israeli security forces entered the West Bank city of Tubas on Wednesday, ordering several Palestinian residents to evacuate their homes in what marks the latest phase of a months-long campaign across northern West Bank cities.
Tubas Governor Ahmed Al-Asaad told Reuters that Israeli forces — supported by a helicopter that opened fire — had surrounded the city and taken up positions in multiple neighbourhoods. “This incursion appears to be a prolonged one. Occupation forces have driven people from their houses, taken over rooftops, and are carrying out arrests,” he said.
Armoured vehicles were seen moving through Tubas as troops patrolled the streets with rifles and rocket launchers. Soldiers also deployed in the nearby town of Tammun.
Asked about the mission, Israeli government spokesperson Shosh Bedrosian said the security forces were acting “to thwart terrorist activity.” The Israeli military confirmed that the operation, conducted alongside police and intelligence units, began early Wednesday but declined to provide further details.
Al-Asaad said residents who were forced to leave their homes were instructed not to return until the operation concludes.
