BHUBANESWAR: Authorities in Odisha’s Bhadrak district suspended internet services for 24 hours starting at 6 a.m. on Thursday in Bhadrak town, Tihidi, and Dhamnagar blocks following the death of a youth injured in a recent communal clash.
The deceased, Santosh Parida, a resident of Tihidi, had been receiving treatment since sustaining critical injuries during a violent confrontation between two communities on May 30. He succumbed to his injuries on Wednesday, prompting the administration to impose a temporary internet shutdown as a precaution to prevent unrest or the spread of misinformation.
Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi expressed condolences and announced a ₹10 lakh ex-gratia payment for Parida’s family. Additionally, one member of the bereaved family will receive employment assistance. “We stand with the grieving family during this difficult time. The government is committed to maintaining peace and order,” the chief minister said in a statement.
As tensions remain high, law enforcement has arrested 12 individuals in connection with the May 30 violence. Bhadrak Superintendent of Police Manoj Rout confirmed the arrests and said efforts are ongoing to track down other suspects. “The situation is stable and under control. The internet suspension is a preventive measure to curb the spread of rumours and avoid further disturbances,” he added.
To bolster security, 27 platoons of police have been deployed across sensitive zones within the district. Authorities are also engaging local leaders to mediate and promote dialogue between the affected communities to foster communal harmony.
A government spokesperson confirmed that the situation is being closely monitored and urged citizens to remain calm. “We appeal to the public to cooperate with law enforcement and refrain from any actions that could disrupt peace. Ensuring communal harmony is a shared responsibility,” the official said.
The Odisha government has reiterated its commitment to swift justice and long-term peace-building efforts in the region.
