NEW DELHI: Ukrainian media on Tuesday claimed that a 22-year-old Indian national, identified as Majoti Sahil Mohammed from Morbi, Gujarat, has been captured by Ukrainian forces while fighting for the Russian army. While the Indian government has not confirmed the detention, it has acknowledged efforts to verify the report.
Government sources said the Indian embassy in Kyiv had not received any official communication from Ukrainian authorities regarding the incident. The foreign ministry is reportedly looking into the matter.
According to reports from Ukrainian outlets including Kyiv Independent and Ukrainska Pravda, Mohammed had initially travelled to Russia to pursue studies. However, after a drug-related conviction, he was allegedly forced to join the Russian military under a deal offering reduced punishment in exchange for frontline service.
In a video released by Ukraine’s 63rd Mechanised Brigade, the man—believed to be Mohammed—is seen stating that he surrendered voluntarily, expressing that he had no intention of fighting and now seeks help. He claimed he was promised freedom and payment ranging from RUB 100,000 to 1.5 million (approximately $1,200 to $18,000) in exchange for a year of military service—neither of which materialised.
“I don’t want to go back to Russia. There is no truth there,” he was quoted as saying. He also expressed a desire to either remain in Ukraine or return to India.
India Reiterates Warning to Citizens
Last month, the Indian Ministry of External Affairs confirmed that 27 Indian nationals were still serving in the Russian military. The ministry has repeatedly cautioned Indian citizens against accepting offers to join foreign armed forces—particularly in conflict zones—due to the high risks involved.
