NEW DELHI: US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor arrived in the country on Friday, saying there are “incredible opportunities” for stronger cooperation between the two nations.
In a post on X, Gor wrote, “Great to be back in India! Incredible opportunities ahead for our two nations!”
His visit comes at a sensitive time in bilateral ties, following US President Donald Trump’s approval of a bill allowing tariffs of at least 500% on countries importing Russian oil. US Senator Lindsey Graham has said the measure would give Washington leverage over countries such as India, China and Brazil to discourage the purchase of discounted Russian crude.
Gor was sworn in as US Ambassador to India in November at the White House, where President Trump underscored the importance of the US-India relationship and expressed confidence in his appointment.
He had visited India earlier in October, meeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and National Security Advisor Ajit Doval.
Trump nominated Gor in August as the next US ambassador to India and Special Envoy for South and Central Asian Affairs. During his confirmation hearing before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee in September, Gor described India as “one of the most important relationships” for the United States.
