New Delhi: A Sukhoi Su‑30MKI fighter jet of the Indian Air Force crashed in Assam’s Karbi Anglong district during a training mission late Thursday night, officials confirmed.
In an update posted on X (formerly Twitter), the IAF said the aircraft went down around 60 km from Jorhat, from where it had earlier taken off. “The Su-30MKI which was on a training mission crashed in the area of Karbi Anglong, Assam… Search operations are under way,” the force said.
Officials had earlier reported that the aircraft lost radar contact shortly after departure from Jorhat, prompting an immediate search effort in the region.
The Su-30MKI is a two-seat, long-range multirole fighter jet originally developed by Russian aerospace company Sukhoi. The aircraft is produced in India under licence by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) for the IAF.
The Indian Air Force currently operates a fleet of more than 260 Su-30MKI jets, making it the backbone of India’s fighter aircraft inventory. Search and rescue teams are continuing operations at the crash site.
