THANE: A 17-year-old boy has been detained by the Kapurbawdi police for allegedly setting his 17-year-old girlfriend on fire following a quarrel. The girl suffered severe burns, with nearly 80% of her body injured, and is currently receiving medical treatment, police said.

According to authorities, the victim had been living with her family in the Kapurbawdi area but had previously resided in Chembur, where she became friends with the accused. The two were reportedly in a relationship and kept in contact even after she moved to Thane.

Police stated that the girl had visited Chembur for the Bhai Dooj festival, where an argument between the couple escalated into physical assault. When her relatives intervened, the boy allegedly threatened them, warning that he “would not spare her.” Disturbed by the incident, the girl returned to Thane.

On October 24, while the girl was home alone, neighbours noticed smoke coming from her apartment and immediately informed her mother. When the family rushed back, they discovered the boy inside the flat and found the girl engulfed in flames, screaming for help.

She was quickly rushed to the hospital. The boy fled the scene but was later apprehended by the police after the girl’s mother filed a complaint.

The Kapurbawdi police have registered a case under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita 2023, which covers charges of abetment and causing grievous hurt.
