Chandigarh recorded a decline in snatching incidents and a marginal drop in heinous crimes in 2025, even as cases involving sexual offences against minors showed a worrying increase, police data revealed.

Across 16 police stations, 100 snatching cases were reported in 2025, down 24% from 131 the previous year. Overall heinous crimes dipped slightly from 418 in 2024 to 412 in 2025, with police solving around 88% of these cases. However, the number of rape cases involving minors rose sharply to 66 from 47 last year, while molestation of minor girls increased to 14 from eight.

Police also intensified action against drug trafficking, registering 149 cases under the NDPS Act — 59 more than in 2024 — and arresting 235 suspects. Enforcement under the Arms Act was stepped up as well, with 100 cases registered, compared to 77 last year.

A major crackdown was launched against unauthorised immigration firms, resulting in 129 cheating cases against owners and staff of 92 companies accused of duping people with false promises of overseas travel. In addition, 73 individuals were booked under the BNS-2023 for violating district magistrate orders. Police also busted an inter-state fake currency racket, seizing counterfeit ₹500 notes worth nearly ₹22.4 lakh and arresting four accused.

To curb public drinking, 200 cases were registered and 220 people arrested. In a major security operation, police foiled a potential terror attack by arresting members of the Happy Passia terror module and later detained a Babbar Khalsa operative linked to Pakistan-based terrorist networks.

Director General of Police Sagar Preet Hooda said sustained, intelligence-led policing led to the decline in heinous crimes, while SSP Kanwardeep Kaur reiterated a zero-tolerance policy towards crimes against women and minors, adding that all rape cases reported in 2025 were solved.
