GURGAON: Heavy rains brought Gurgaon to a standstill on Monday, with waterlogged roads and stalled vehicles triggering massive traffic snarls across the city.
The Delhi-Jaipur Expressway (NH-48) near Rajiv Chowk saw the worst congestion, where traffic police deployed pumps to drain water. Long tailbacks stretched for kilometres, with a 4-km jam reported between Hero Honda Chowk and Narsinghpur. Viral videos on social media showed headlights stretching endlessly in both directions as commuters remained trapped late into the night.
By 7:30 pm, the traffic police helpline had logged nearly 200 calls for assistance with breakdowns, towing, and route diversions. More than 25 vehicles, including a bus near Jharsa, had broken down, worsening the gridlock. Bikes and cars were removed using cranes and manual assistance.
Other major choke points included Narsinghpur, Hero Honda Chowk, IFFCO Chowk, Kherki Daula toll, Khushal Chowk, Mahavir Chowk bus stand (where an underpass was inundated), Gurgaon Railway Station Road, Golf Course Road, Subash Chowk, Vatika Chowk, Tulip Chowk, Malibu Town, Bilaspur, Signature Tower, CRP Chowk, Agrasen Chowk, and Sheetla Mata Temple Road.
Frustrated commuters said journeys that normally take 20 minutes stretched to more than 90. “Usually it takes me 20 minutes to reach Shankar Chowk from Atlas Chowk, but today it took an hour and a half,” said Sunidhi Sharma, stuck on NH-48. IT professional Niharika Singh echoed the frustration: “My 20-minute commute from Cyber City to Sector 14 turned into a 90-minute crawl.”
DCP (Traffic) Rajesh Mohan said over 100 waterlogging points were managed by traffic personnel, with 23 critical stretches given priority. “We coordinated with other departments to drain water and used cranes to clear stranded vehicles,” he said.
The chaos once again highlighted Gurgaon’s chronic infrastructure gaps, with even brief spells of rain exposing weak drainage, broken roads, and inadequate traffic management—issues residents say recur every monsoon despite repeated warnings.
