NEW DELHI — The Parliamentary Standing Committee on External Affairs, chaired by Congress MP Shashi Tharoor, will on Monday receive a briefing on India’s foreign policy, with a focus on trade negotiations and tariffs with the United States, official sources said.

Officials from the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) and the Ministry of Commerce & Industry will outline recent developments, including the US decision to impose secondary sanctions on India — a move the MEA said has drawn New Delhi into a “geopolitical contest not of its making.” Despite what it called an “erosion of trust,” the MEA maintained that India remains committed to constructive engagement with Washington.

The briefing comes after the US imposed 50% tariffs on Indian goods. On Friday, Tharoor expressed concern over the shift in US behaviour toward a “strategic partner,” saying India must safeguard its interests while seeking a diplomatic resolution in the coming weeks.
