Goto Floating Wind Farm LLC said commercial operation of the Goto Offshore Wind Farm, described as Japan’s first commercial floating offshore wind power project, began on January 5, 2026, according to a company announcement.
The project is certified by Japan’s Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry and the Minister of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism under the Marine Renewable Energy Sea-Area Utilization Act, making it the first facility of its kind in the country to receive such approval.
The wind farm is also Japan’s first commercial floating offshore wind installation. The facility uses a hybrid spar-type floating structure with a steel upper section and a concrete lower section.
The structure was designed and built by TODA CORPORATION, the lead company of the special purpose company operating the project, and is described as the world’s first commercial application of this hybrid spar-type floater technology.
According to the company, multiple local firms participated in the construction phase, and local companies are expected to take part in operations and maintenance. Electricity generated by the wind farm will be supplied preferentially to local retail electricity providers in line with the concept of local production for local consumption.
The project, officially titled the Goto City Offshore Wind Power Generation Project, has a total installed capacity of 16.8 MW from eight floating wind turbines rated at 2.1 MW each, with a total length of 176.1 meters and a rotor diameter of 80 meters. The operator is headquartered in Goto City, Nagasaki Prefecture.
Goto Floating Wind Farm LLC is a project-specific special purpose company established in October 2021 to develop and operate the Goto City Offshore Wind Power Generation Project in Nagasaki Prefecture, Japan.
