GUWAHATI: The death toll from rain-induced floods and landslides in the Northeast climbed to 44 on Tuesday, with eight more fatalities reported in the past 24 hours.

In Assam, one death each was recorded in the districts of Hailakandi, Sribhumi, Morigaon, Cachar, Sonitpur, and Tinsukia. One person also died in Manipur, while a labourer was killed when a wall collapsed in Arunachal Pradesh’s Anjaw district.

The flood situation in Assam worsened significantly, with the number of affected people rising from 5.15 lakh on Monday to over 6.33 lakh by Tuesday. Floodwaters have now impacted 21 out of the state’s 35 districts.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall in isolated parts of Assam on Wednesday, with heavy showers also expected in Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Mizoram, and Tripura.

Meanwhile, the Brahmaputra River crossed the danger mark in Tezpur, along with its tributaries Burhidihing and Kopili, heightening concerns of further inundation.
