New Delhi: Police probing the double murder of an elderly couple in Shahdara on Sunday have recovered CCTV footage showing a masked suspect moving towards the victims’ residence.

Investigators said the house of Virender Kumar Bansal (75) and his wife Parvesh Bansal (65) was fitted with an electronic lock, which the killer allegedly opened using a key. After committing the crime, the suspect is believed to have locked the gate again with the same key. As part of the probe, police have rounded up and questioned several key makers.

Police had earlier noted that the interior of the house appeared largely undisturbed, with household items found in their usual places.

According to sources, the suspect was first captured on CCTV around 6 pm on Saturday near the Bansals’ residence. His movements were recorded again at about 8.20 pm in the same area. Investigators are examining multiple angles, including the possibility of a contract killing and the involvement of more than one person.

Police are also probing whether robbery was a motive, as the family reported that jewellery belonging to the elderly woman was missing. Investigators are considering whether the theft may have been staged to divert attention from the real motive. Sources said Virender Bansal used to lend money on interest, prompting police to examine the possibility of a financial dispute.

It was also found that the television in the house was on at the time of the murders. Police are checking whether the sound may have masked any unusual noise, preventing neighbours from realising something was wrong. Residents of nearby houses have been questioned to ascertain whether they noticed any suspicious activity.

The couple’s son, Vaibhav Bansal, returned home late at night and found his parents lying unconscious with injuries in separate rooms. He alerted the police, who received a PCR call about the incident around 12.30 am. The couple was later declared dead at the hospital.
