DHAKA: Bangladesh has said it sees no obstacle to improving ties with India, but progress requires efforts from both sides. Foreign affairs adviser Md Touhid Hossain made the remarks on Thursday while also confirming there was no update from New Delhi on Dhaka’s request to extradite former prime minister Sheikh Hasina.

“We wrote once, and updates will be shared if another request is sent,” Hossain told reporters. In July, he had said the government would keep pressing for Hasina’s return. The former leader fled Bangladesh in August 2024 after a mass uprising, and Dhaka sent a formal extradition request to India in December that year.

On questions regarding the possible return of BNP acting chairperson Tarique Rahman—living in self-imposed exile in the UK—Hossain said it was “his decision when he chooses to come back,” ahead of the upcoming polls.
