New Delhi: In one of its biggest crackdowns in recent months, Delhi Police detained 36 people and arrested seven, including the father of gangster Neeraj Bawana, during coordinated raids across Delhi and Haryana late Wednesday night.
Over 820 personnel in 58 teams carried out the pre-dawn strikes at multiple locations in Delhi, Sonipat, Rohtak, Jhajjar, Bahadurgarh, and Sampla, seizing ₹49.5 lakh in cash, 1.4kg gold, 14.6kg silver, eight firearms, three dozen live cartridges, 27 mobile phones, a bulletproof Scorpio SUV, and a laptop.
Special commissioner (law and order) Ravindra Singh Yadav said the raids were aimed at dismantling the support network of notorious gangsters operating from abroad or jail, including Kala Jathedi, Neeraj Bawana, Rajesh Bawana, Neetu Dabodia, and the late Tillu Tajpuriya and Jitender Gogi.
Among those arrested was Prem Singh Sehrawat (67), father of jailed gangster Neeraj Bawana. Police are considering invoking the MCOCA against the accused.
The raids—led by joint CP Vijay Singh and DCPs Hareshwar Swami and Rajeev Ranjan—followed a similar offensive against the UK-based gangster Kapil Sangwan’s network last week, which netted a bulletproof car and over ₹30 lakh.
Officials said the crackdown is intended to cut off the financial and logistical lifelines of these syndicates. “These gangsters rely on foot soldiers, financiers and henchmen for extortion, violence and intimidation. Our goal is to break this ecosystem,” said a senior officer.
Police commissioner Satish Golcha had recently ordered an intensified offensive to reassure the business community amid rising complaints of extortion threats.
