New Delhi: A scooter rider died after being rammed by a speeding car and thrown off the NH-24 Manglam Cut flyover in east Delhi, police said on Thursday.

The car, which was badly damaged in the collision, is believed to have been driven at high speed. Witness Amit Kumar, an auto driver, rushed the victim to LBS Hospital with the help of bystanders, but he succumbed to his injuries.

DCP (East) Abhishek Dhania said the vehicle owner has been identified as Shakil Ahmed, a resident of Friends Colony, who is currently out of the city. An FIR has been registered at Pandav Nagar police station under Sections 281 (rash driving) and 106 (causing death by negligence) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.

The victim, Agarwal, ran a douna pattal (leaf plate) manufacturing unit in Badarpur. He is survived by his wife Hemlata and two daughters, one studying medicine and the other engineering. Outside the LBS Hospital mortuary, Hemlata wept inconsolably: “He’s gone… what words do I have left?”

Locals said they heard a loud crash before rushing to the spot, where a broken helmet and pieces of the scooter lay near the victim.

The stretch of NH-24, lined with shops and homes, is often quiet at night but turns hazardous in the early hours. Around 3 am Thursday, another accident occurred just a short distance away on the same flyover when two motorcycles collided, leaving both riders injured.
