NEW DELHI: India’s Covid-19 death toll has climbed to 37 amid the current wave, with five more deaths reported on Tuesday. The latest fatalities include two from Maharashtra and one each from Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and West Bengal.

The total number of active Covid-19 cases in the country has reached 4,026. Kerala accounts for the highest number with 1,416 cases, followed by Maharashtra (494), Gujarat (397), and Delhi (393).

So far this year, Maharashtra has reported the highest number of Covid-related deaths at 10, followed by Kerala (9), Delhi (4), Karnataka (4), Tamil Nadu (3), and Uttar Pradesh (2). Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, Rajasthan, and West Bengal have each reported one death.

The two latest deaths in Maharashtra were women in their 70s with underlying conditions such as diabetes. In Kerala, the deceased was an 80-year-old man with severe pneumonia, ARDS (acute respiratory distress syndrome), diabetes, hypertension, and heart disease.

Tamil Nadu’s reported fatality was a 69-year-old woman with type 2 diabetes and Parkinson’s disease. In West Bengal, the victim was a 43-year-old woman with acute coronary syndrome, septic shock, and kidney failure.
