NOIDA: An 18-year-old Class 12 student allegedly died by suicide after shooting himself with his father’s licensed pistol at his home in Greater Noida on Saturday evening, police said.

The teenager, Devkaran Rawal, lived in Dhoom Manikpur village and was a student at NTPC School in Dadri. He is survived by his parents and a younger brother who is differently abled. His grandfather, a retired Army personnel, now works as a farmer, while his father is a property dealer.

According to police, the incident occurred while Devkaran’s parents were in their room. He had gone to his own room on the first floor.

Amit Bhadana, SHO of Badalpur Police Station, said officers were alerted by the hospital where the teenager was taken. “A police team reached the hospital and was informed that the boy had shot himself in the head,” he said.

Preliminary investigation indicates that before the incident, Devkaran deleted data from his mobile phone and smashed his laptop on the floor. “After that, he used his father’s licensed pistol, which was kept at home, to shoot himself,” Bhadana said.

Hearing the gunshot, his parents rushed upstairs and found him lying on the floor in a pool of blood. Neighbours gathered and helped take him to a nearby private hospital, where doctors attempted to save him. However, he succumbed to his injuries during treatment.

Police said no suicide note was recovered from the room. The body has been sent for post-mortem examination, and the report is awaited.

A senior officer said the licensed pistol was usually kept inside an almirah in the father’s room. “The family told us they were unaware when the boy entered their room and took the firearm,” the officer added.

Investigators are now examining his phone records and social media accounts to determine possible reasons behind the incident. Further inquiry is underway.
