THANE: A chlorine gas leak at the STEM Water Distribution plant in Bhiwandi late Monday night triggered panic and left five workers hospitalized with breathing difficulties, officials said.
The incident occurred around 12:30 a.m. when a valve on the chlorine pipeline, used in water purification, began leaking. Workers attempting to shut the valve were quickly overcome by toxic fumes, coughing and gasping for breath.
Police rushed the affected employees to a private hospital, where they are undergoing treatment for chlorine inhalation. The area was cordoned off, and residents nearby were advised to remain indoors until the leak was contained.
Preliminary reports point to a valve malfunction as the likely cause. Authorities have launched an investigation and said safety checks at the facility will be intensified.
