SYDNEY: A brief disruption occurred at Sydney Airport, Australia’s busiest aviation hub, on Wednesday after a police firearm was discharged during an attempted arrest inside the terminal.
The Australian Federal Police (AFP) confirmed the incident, stating that a police officer’s weapon discharged while attempting to detain a man. According to local media reports, the shot was fired during a struggle, when the man allegedly tried to grab the officer’s weapon.
Footage aired by local outlets showed an officer inspecting his firearm as two other individuals restrained the suspect on the ground. Eyewitnesses reported hearing a loud bang, after which the nearby dining area was temporarily locked down, according to Sydney radio station 2GB.
Police confirmed that no one was injured, and there is no ongoing threat to the public. “A crime scene has been established, and an investigation into the incident is underway,” the AFP said in a statement.
Airport operations have since returned to normal.
