CHANDIGARH: In a shocking incident on Diwali morning, a 40-year-old man allegedly murdered his 60-year-old mother at their home in Sector 40, Chandigarh. The autopsy revealed the victim, identified as Sushila, had been stabbed 16 times, with her throat slit.
The accused, Ravinder Negi alias Ravi, fled the scene carrying the knife but was later arrested in Sonipat, Haryana, with the weapon recovered from his possession. Police said Ravi, who works at Panjab University, was reportedly mentally disturbed.
According to Sector 39 police, neighbour Aakash Bains alerted authorities after hearing screams around 7 am. When residents reached the spot, they found the door locked from inside. Entering through the terrace, they saw Ravi escaping with a knife, while Sushila lay in a pool of blood.
The police control room (112) was immediately informed. Officers from Sector 39 police station reached the site, sent the body for post-mortem at GMSH-16, and informed the victim’s elder son, who lives in Sector 41. The body was handed over to the family on Tuesday.
A murder case was registered against Ravi based on Bains’ statement. He was produced in court and sent to 14-day judicial custody. Forensic teams collected samples from the scene, and multiple teams have been formed for further investigation.
Originally from Uttarakhand, Sushila had been living in Sector 40 for several years. Police said Ravi’s wife and daughter stay separately, and he had moved in with his mother six months ago after his father’s death a decade earlier.
