Carboninsets, the independent matchmaker service for verified Environmental Attribute Certificates (EACs), has launched a digital marketplace to support global transactions of high-quality EACs in hard-to-abate sectors, starting with transportation. The marketplace brings together qualified demand and verified EAC supply from fuel suppliers and fleet operators active in air, road, marine, rail, inland shipping and logistic hubs, across all major decarbonization technologies.
By bringing verified EAC supply and qualified demand into one intuitive and seamless platform, the Carboninsets marketplace provides real-time visibility on availability and pricing and facilitates global EAC transactions. The marketplace not only allows transactions based on the current inventory of the issuer, but it also seeks to facilitate transactions for future projects that need financing, such as green corridors.
The Carboninsets marketplace offers buyers assurances that the emissions reduction quoted in a certificate reflects a genuine, quantified lifecycle saving, supported by robust data, traceability and independent third-party verification. This high level of transparency and credibility allows buyers to compare available EACs and make a well-informed purchasing decision, considering criteria like technology, geography, feedstock, emission reductions, additionality and vintage.
All EACs have been externally verified by accredited auditors and issued onto the 123Carbon Registry, the only globally available multi-modal registry, following the latest global standards, such as the Smart Freight Centre’s Market Based Measures (MBM) framework and the recently published ISO 22095 standard on Book & Claim. By partnering with 123Carbon, Carboninsets not only provides a high level of comparability between offers, but it also safeguards against double counting and ensures that all certificates adhere to the highest industry standard.
Maria Lacalle Muls, Head of Customer Decarbonization at Carboninsets, said: “Decarbonizing hard-to-abate sectors such as transport has been constrained by the poor comparability and the fragmentation of emission reduction solutions. Book & Claim solves this issue. The Carboninsets marketplace unlocks live access to available EACs volumes by creating a practical solution to accelerate decarbonization.
“Carboninsets has already started to onboard the 30+ issuers that have jointly issued over 500.000 EACs in the 123Carbon Registry, across all transport modalities and geographies. In a nutshell, our new marketplace enables companies to access current and future offers of EACs in the most transparent way, helping turn decarbonization commitments into immediate action”.
Jeroen van Heiningen, managing director at 123Carbon, said: “This one-of-a-kind marketplace provides issuers of the 123Carbon registry with an additional sales channel that they can manage directly from their existing inventory. It also gives them direct access to global demand beyond their existing customer base.”
Tom Isler Associate Director ESG, Innovation and Technology at Baxter Freight, added: “Supply chains are becoming increasingly complex, and Carboninsets understands this challenge. They’ve supported us in executing practical decarbonization strategies, and we’re now excited to start using their new marketplace. With a transparent, compliance-ready, and user-friendly platform, reducing our Scope 3 emissions has become significantly more seamless.”
Sami Khan, CEO at Nevoya, commented: “As the leading North American carrier in the book & claim space, we’re generating real, verified transport EACs at scale. The Carboninsets marketplace launch provides new market access where we can connect with qualified buyers worldwide in a transparent, real-time environment, while staying in control of pricing and volumes. We are excited to partner with Carboninsets to bring global solutions to market.”
The marketplace will officially launch during Smart Freight Week 2026, Tuesday 14 – 16 April at De Kromhouthal, Amsterdam.
