DHAKA: Amid sporadic attacks on minorities, a businessman was critically injured in a brutal assault in Damudya, in Bangladesh’s Shariatpur district. Khokon Chandra Das (50) was attacked, hacked with sharp weapons and set on fire by miscreants on Wednesday night, before being shifted to Dhaka for advanced treatment.

The incident occurred around 9.30 pm near Keurbhanga Bazaar in Koneshwar Union of Damudya upazila. Khokon, who runs a medicine shop and a mobile banking business at the bazaar, was returning home in an autorickshaw after closing his shop when the attackers intercepted the vehicle on the Damudya–Shariatpur road, officials said.

The assailants allegedly beat him, attacked him with sharp weapons and then poured petrol on him before setting him on fire. In an attempt to save his life, Khokon jumped into a nearby pond. Hearing screams, local residents rushed to the spot, prompting the attackers to flee, eyewitnesses said.

He was initially taken to Shariatpur Sadar Hospital, but was referred to Dhaka after his condition deteriorated. Doctors said he suffered multiple injuries across his body.

Khokon’s wife, Seema Das, told reporters that her husband recognised two of the attackers, which she believes may have led to the attempt on his life. “We have no disputes with anyone. We do not understand why he was targeted,” she said.

Police said two local suspects, identified as Rabbi and Sohag, have been named in the case, adding that efforts are underway to arrest them and identify others involved.
