In an ironic twist, a Thane traffic constable found himself on the receiving end of a fine after a viral video exposed his own road safety violations. The constable, who was caught riding a friend’s scooter without proper safety gear, was slapped with a Rs 2,000 fine for breaching multiple traffic rules.
The situation began to unravel after a video surfaced showing the constable engaged in a heated argument with a biker near Ambika Nagar, Wagle Estate. The footage quickly went viral, prompting an internal investigation by the traffic police department.
On October 27, the constable was fined for several infractions: riding without a valid driving license, using a scooter with missing side mirrors, an illegible number plate, and unauthorized stickers that resembled official insignia. Each of the four violations carried a Rs 500 penalty.
The video, which captured a tense confrontation between the constable and the biker, revealed the latter had earlier been fined for riding without a helmet. The biker, in turn, called out the constable for not following the very rules he was meant to enforce, particularly pointing out the unclear number plate. Defending himself, the constable claimed the scooter was “being towed,” but this explanation was later debunked during the internal review.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Pankaj Shirsat confirmed the fine, stating, “The constable was penalized for using a private vehicle without proper compliance. His claim about the vehicle being towed was found to be false.”
Officials also took action against the biker for his own helmet violation and for obstructing a public servant while on duty.
The incident led to the traffic department issuing a reminder to all personnel that compliance with road safety laws is mandatory for everyone, regardless of their position.
