KOLKATA: A 53-year-old biker from Bishnupur, Sujit Khamaru, suffered a traumatic amputation of his right leg in a multi-vehicle accident on Wednesday involving a private bus, a car, and two motorcycles. He is currently in critical but stable condition at Belle Vue Hospital after undergoing emergency surgery. Another biker was also injured, while three others escaped with minor scratches.

The crash occurred around 8.50 am near the Sakherbazar metro station on the Taratala-bound flank of Diamond Harbour Road. The bus driver fled the scene immediately after the incident.

When rescuers reached Khamaru, he was found bleeding heavily, with the lower portion of his right leg severed and lying several metres away. Police arranged for a private vehicle to rush him — along with the severed limb — first to Vidyasagar Hospital, then to SSKM Hospital, and finally to Belle Vue.

Belle Vue Hospital CEO P. Tondon confirmed that the severed part of the leg had suffered irreversible vascular damage, making reattachment impossible. An orthopaedic surgeon and plastic surgeon operated to repair the remaining limb.
“He is stable but will need time for the wounds to heal. An artificial limb may be considered later,” Tondon said.

Preliminary investigations suggest the accident occurred after the bus driver lost control. Police suspect the vehicle had technical issues and was not roadworthy. Although locals claimed the bus was racing another vehicle, video footage from the area does not support that claim.

According to another injured biker, Imran Ali Molla (34), the bus travelling between Diamond Harbour and Esplanade swerved after crossing the Silpara bus stop. Witness Samiran Saha said the bus hit a car, which then knocked down Molla and struck another vehicle. While trying to speed away, the bus veered sharply to the right and collided with Khamaru, dragging him along the median. A third biker was also injured while attempting to avoid the bus.

Molla was treated at Vidyasagar State General Hospital and SSKM Hospital before being discharged.

“The long-distance bus collided with multiple vehicles — two private cars and two bikes. The cars sustained partial damage and their occupants were unharmed, while the bikers suffered injuries. Thakurpukur Police Station has seized the bus and launched a probe,” said DC (Behala–South West) Rahul De.

Traffic was briefly disrupted until police and emergency services cleared the site.
