BENGALURU: A young couple was found dead in their rented home in Kallabalu, Anekal, in what police believe to be a suicide pact following frequent quarrels over suspicion and alcohol abuse.
The incident came to light on Tuesday morning when neighbours, alarmed after repeated knocks went unanswered, informed the house owner. On peering through the ventilator, the owner saw both individuals hanging from the ceiling fan. Officers from the Jigani police station reached the spot soon after. No suicide note or messages were found on their mobile phones.
The deceased were identified as Rakesh Kumar (23) and Seema Nayak (25), both from Odisha. The couple had moved to Anekal about three months ago in search of work. Seema was employed as a supermarket assistant, while Rakesh worked in housekeeping for a private company.
Preliminary forensic analysis suggests that Rakesh died first, sometime after Sunday midnight. “It appears Seema found Rakesh hanging and tried to save him. When she realised he was dead, she hanged herself,” said a police officer involved in the investigation.
According to Jora Nayak, a close friend, the couple often fought over Rakesh’s suspicions that Seema was involved with another man. “Rakesh was addicted to alcohol and frequently accused Seema of transferring money to someone else. Their fights had become a daily affair,” he said.
Police have registered a case of unnatural death and are awaiting further forensic and post-mortem reports to confirm the sequence of events.
