BENGALURU: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a heavy rainfall alert for Bengaluru on Wednesday, following relentless downpours across the city. In response, several tech companies and multinational corporations have advised employees to work from home, citing safety concerns amid disrupted commutes.
Bengaluru recorded an average rainfall of 42.7 mm on Tuesday. Notably, parts of the RR Nagar zone received a staggering 150 mm on Monday night—the highest in a decade and exceeding even Sunday’s near-record levels.
Despite the intense rainfall, RR Nagar reported minimal flooding, a stark contrast to other vulnerable zones. Officials and residents credit this to effective stormwater management. “Timely desilting of drains and strict garbage disposal monitoring helped prevent flooding from the Vrishabhavathi Valley, which runs through the area,” said a BBMP official. The zone also benefits from a network of 42 interconnected lakes and a 28 km stretch of the valley, which help absorb excess water.
Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar on Tuesday announced plans to introduce legislation prohibiting underground construction—particularly vehicle parking—near lakes and low-lying areas. “A comprehensive action plan will be released once the rains subside,” he said.
