DHAKA: The Bangladesh International Crimes Tribunal on Wednesday issued arrest warrants against former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, her former security adviser Major General (retd) Tarique Ahmed Siddique, and 26 others in connection with two separate cases involving alleged enforced disappearances and crimes against humanity during the tenure of the Awami League government.

The tribunal accepted the prosecution’s charges following a hearing and formally issued the warrants.

One case relates to the abduction and torture of opposition activists at the Taskforce Interrogation Cell, reportedly operated by the elite paramilitary force Rapid Action Battalion (RAB). The second case involves similar allegations of unlawful detention and torture at the Directorate General of Forces Intelligence’s Joint Interrogation Cell.

Sheikh Hasina, 78, has faced multiple legal challenges since being ousted from power last year amid mass student-led protests across the country.

The cases mark a significant legal escalation against key figures from the previous administration and have intensified the already tense political climate in Bangladesh.
