Bangladesh’s special assistant to the chief adviser for the health ministry, Sayedur Rahman, has resigned, becoming the second senior official to leave the Bangladesh interim government led by Muhammad Yunus within a week.

According to a gazette notification issued by the cabinet division on Tuesday night, the president accepted Rahman’s resignation with immediate effect, the Daily Star reported on Wednesday. The reason for his decision was not immediately known.

However, Prothom Alo quoted Rahman as saying that he had submitted his resignation a month ago and that it was formally accepted on Tuesday, the same day his government service term ended.

A former vice-chancellor of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University, Rahman was appointed special assistant to Yunus with the rank of state minister in November last year.

His departure follows the resignation of Khuda Baksh Chowdhury, special assistant to the chief adviser for the home ministry, who stepped down on December 24.
