The Delhi Public Works Department (PWD) will conduct a comprehensive traffic simulation study and road safety audit covering 2,205.68 km of roads across the city’s South, North and East zones to identify congestion hotspots and recommend solutions.
The ₹11.17-crore exercise will cover 1,796 roads and is expected to be completed within three months. It will use digital models to assess traffic movement and test possible interventions before their implementation.
The study will cover 270 roads spanning 426.28 km in the South Zone, 1,137 roads covering 1,374.76 km in the North Zone and 389 roads stretching 404.64 km in the East Zone.
According to the project report, traffic congestion has increased across Delhi, with even stretches that earlier experienced smooth movement now witnessing frequent bottlenecks, particularly during peak hours.
Rising vehicle numbers, inadequate road capacity, poorly designed intersections, on-street parking and conflicting traffic movements have contributed to the problem.
The department will collect data on traffic volumes, vehicle speeds, travel times, road geometry, pedestrian movement, public transport operations and parking demand.
The information will be used to create digital models of roads and intersections, allowing engineers to test measures such as changes in signal timings, U-turns, turning lanes and traffic circulation patterns.
The models will also assess proposed infrastructure projects, including road widening, flyovers and underpasses, before construction.
A road safety audit will examine accident-prone stretches and infrastructure used by pedestrians and cyclists. It will assess signage, lighting, footpaths, crossings, cycle tracks and road design.
Based on the findings, the department will recommend measures such as safer pedestrian crossings, improved road markings, speed-control interventions and redesigned junctions to reduce congestion and improve road safety.
