Ghanakanta Gogoi, the accused in the Guwahati hotel firing that killed five people, was killed in an encounter early Wednesday while allegedly attempting to escape police custody in Assam’s Sibsagar district.
Police said Gogoi was being taken from Guwahati to Sibsagar in connection with a separate case when he allegedly tried to snatch an investigating officer’s service weapon near Gaurisagar around 3.12 am.
Another policeman opened fire, injuring Gogoi, who was later declared dead at Sibsagar Civil Hospital. An officer was also injured in the incident.
Gogoi allegedly shot six people, including Hotel Bilas Inn owner Helena Bharali, on October 26. Five victims died. A dispute over the hotel’s lease is suspected to have triggered the shooting.
He was also facing cheating and forgery charges in Sibsagar. Police said investigations into both cases are ongoing.
