The US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has launched a nationwide operation targeting undocumented immigrants accused of fraudulently obtaining food assistance benefits, as the Trump administration intensifies its crackdown on alleged misuse of federal programmes.

In a post on X on October 21, ICE said multiple immigrants had been arrested over alleged fraud involving the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), which provides food assistance to eligible low-income individuals and families.

The agency said the arrests were part of the Trump administration’s Task Force to Eliminate Fraud, an initiative aimed at investigating the misuse of taxpayer-funded programmes. ICE added that enforcement action could include arrests and deportations, depending on the circumstances of individual cases.

ICE Targets Alleged Food Assistance Fraud

According to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), the operation has resulted in multiple arrests. A Fox News report identified several Haitian nationals and a Cuban national among those apprehended.

Authorities said investigations into suspected fraud involving food assistance benefits would continue. However, the allegations against individual suspects must be established through evidence and legal proceedings.

The operation follows a broader federal crackdown on suspected fraud involving SNAP and other government assistance programmes.

What Is SNAP and Who Is Eligible?

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, commonly known as food stamps, helps eligible households with limited incomes purchase groceries. Benefits are generally distributed through electronic benefit transfer (EBT) cards.

The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) administers the programme, while individual states process applications and distribute benefits.

Undocumented immigrants are ineligible for SNAP under federal rules. Certain categories of lawfully present noncitizens may qualify if they meet the applicable immigration-status and other eligibility requirements.

The programme aims to support households facing food insecurity, while federal and state authorities are responsible for investigating suspected misuse of benefits.

Trump Administration Expands Anti-Fraud Efforts

The ICE operation forms part of a wider effort by the Trump administration to investigate alleged fraud involving federal assistance programmes.

On October 21, the US Department of Justice announced a nationwide enforcement effort involving SNAP and other USDA programmes. According to the department, actions against more than 40 defendants involved alleged or established schemes associated with nearly $45 million in intended losses to the federal government, including almost $42 million involving SNAP.

The cases included allegations of stolen benefit-card information, fraudulent transactions and schemes involving the exchange of benefits for cash or other prohibited items.

The Justice Department said the enforcement effort involved federal prosecutors, the USDA and other law enforcement agencies.

ICE has indicated that the nationwide operation will continue as the administration pursues its broader initiative to investigate suspected fraud involving taxpayer-funded assistance programmes.
