GTMaritime has launched GT Connect, a new maritime collaboration platform that connects vessel and shore-based teams, their communications and the operational work that follows.
Building on GTMaritime’s experience in maritime communications, GT Connect brings conversations, people, information and tasks together within a shared operational workspace, helping teams work more efficiently, maintain visibility and make better-informed decisions.
Email remains fundamental to maritime operations, but the work generated by those communications often continues beyond the email itself. A conversation may lead to a task, a booking, a technical case, a document that needs reviewing or an action that has to be followed through by another member of the team.
In practice, the resulting information can become fragmented across individual inboxes, spreadsheets, messaging platforms, software systems and people’s own knowledge of what has happened.
GT Connect has been developed to address that gap.
Rather than replacing email, the platform connects communications with the operational activity surrounding them. Conversations can sit alongside vessels, users, tasks, cases, bookings, documents and configured workflows within a shared operational workspace.
The objective is to make it easier for operational maritime teams to understand not simply what has been communicated, but what is happening as a result, what needs to happen next and who is responsible for it.
Jamie Jones, Managing Director of GTMaritime, says the distinction is important because maritime businesses already generate large volumes of operational information. The challenge is often maintaining the context around that information as work moves between individuals, departments, vessels and shore teams.
For example, a communication may concern an engineer due to attend a vessel during its next port call. Within GT Connect, that conversation can be associated with the vessel and the relevant operational process, allowing the resulting work and supporting information to remain connected as the activity progresses.
This also has implications for continuity.
Responsibilities in shipping frequently move between people and teams. Crews rotate, people join and leave vessels, and shoreside responsibilities can move between individuals. Information held solely within a personal inbox can therefore become difficult for the next person to recover or understand.
GT Connect helps preserve that organisational context, keeping conversations, decisions and operational activity accessible as responsibilities change. Communications remain available and searchable, while changes to cases, workflows and other controlled activity can be traced through their histories and audit records.
Secure operational chat across shore and vessel teams
GT Connect also provides real-time operational chat for direct conversations, private groups and workstreams. Shore teams can communicate with colleagues, teams and current vessel-role holders, while access follows workspace permissions and active team or vessel assignments. Chat messages and attachments remain internal to the workspace, and relevant exchanges can be linked to conversations, cases, tasks and bookings so that decisions retain their operational context.
Putting AI to work with operational context
AI adds another layer of intelligence to GT Connect, helping maritime teams make better use of the information already available to them. By drawing on relevant conversations, vessel information and operational context, AI can help users quickly interpret communications, identify key information and understand what needs attention.
Rather than simply summarising messages, it provides practical assistance within everyday workflows, helping teams save time, reduce manual effort and make more informed decisions.
Developed around maritime workflows
GT Connect has been shaped through close collaboration with maritime industry stakeholders, combining GTMaritime’s experience in ship-shore communications with input from people managing day-to-day maritime operations.
This collaborative approach has helped ensure the platform addresses real operational challenges, from managing shared communications and maintaining continuity between crews to improving visibility of responsibilities and outstanding work. Rather than asking shipping companies to adapt to another generic collaboration tool, GT Connect has been developed around the way maritime teams actually work.
Feedback has particularly focused on vessel communications, shared mailboxes, handovers, ownership of work and the transition from a communication into a defined operational action.
By maintaining the connection between communications and the operational work they generate, GT Connect helps maritime teams spend less time searching for information, reconstructing previous decisions and establishing who is responsible for the next action. For organisations managing large fleets and complex operations, this creates opportunities to improve efficiency, accountability and collaboration across teams.
GT Connect offers a new approach to how maritime teams manage communication and collaboration. By bringing people, conversations and operational activity together around a shared understanding of what’s happening across the fleet, the platform creates opportunities for more efficient working, stronger collaboration and better-informed decisions.
For GTMaritime, it’s about taking maritime communications beyond the exchange of information and making that information more valuable to the people and operations that depend on it.
