A five-member committee constituted by the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi to investigate the circumstances surrounding the death by suicide of a 31-year-old MSc Physics student is likely to receive a second extension after it did not submit its report by the September 30 deadline.

The committee may seek an additional week to complete the report. The delay has reportedly been attributed to the need to record statements from some students again. The statements have now been completed, while the compilation of the findings is expected to take a few more days.

The student, who was pursuing an MSc in Physics, died on August 23 after falling from the sixth floor of the Lecture Hall Complex on the IIT Delhi campus. The incident was followed by several days of student protests, with students calling for an independent investigation into alleged institutional lapses.

IIT Delhi initially constituted the five-member committee on August 25. Former Uttarakhand Director General of Police Ashok Kumar was appointed as its chairperson but later recused himself, citing personal reasons.

The committee was subsequently reconstituted on August 27, with retired Delhi High Court judge Mukta Gupta appointed as chairperson. The panel was initially given two weeks to submit its report. On September 14, the institute extended the deadline by another two weeks.

If the latest extension is granted, it would be the second extension provided to the committee.
