HJ Shipbuilding & Construction said on the 30th that it held a naming ceremony for an eco-friendly 7,900-TEU (1 TEU is one 20-foot container) container ship at the Busan Yeongdo shipyard.

At the naming ceremony held on the 29th of this month, Konstantinos Pavlopoulos, Deputy Minister of Greece’s TMS, and Yoo Sang-cheol, CEO of HJ Shipbuilding & Construction, were among about 50 attendees from the shipyard, Korea Trade Insurance Corporation (K-sure), classification societies, and partner companies. TMS is the owner of the vessel built this time.

At the ceremony, the Deputy Minister Pavlopoulos’s spouse served as the DAEMO Engineering (Godmother), giving the ship the name “GARNET” and wishing for safe voyages and accident-free operations for the crew.

The vessel is the fourth of eight 7,900-TEU container ships ordered from HJ Shipbuilding & Construction by a European shipowner in 2024, and measures 272 meters in length, 42 meters in beam, and 20 meters in depth. It is an eco-friendly container ship designed to improve fuel efficiency and reduce carbon emissions.

Since reentering the merchant shipbuilding market in 2021, HJ Shipbuilding & Construction has delivered a total of 14 medium- to large-sized eco-friendly container ships in the 5,000–9,000 TEU range that it won. This year, it won orders for eight eco-friendly 10,100-TEU container ships.

Yoo Sang-cheol, CEO of HJ Shipbuilding & Construction, said, “We will continue to build ships that customers can trust based on advanced eco-friendly technologies and differentiated construction capabilities, further solidifying our position as a global shipbuilder.”
