A 28-year-old woman has been arrested after allegedly throwing her toddler daughter and young nephew into a well following an argument with her husband, police said Sunday. The nephew drowned, while the daughter survived.
Authorities initially treated the incident as an accident, but a subsequent investigation revealed it was intentional.
According to police, the incident occurred on Saturday afternoon in Perne, Bantwal taluka, near Mangalore. The accused, Noorunissa, reportedly pushed both children, each around three years old, into a well near her home in a moment of rage following a phone argument with her husband, Sinan.
Dakshina Kannada Superintendent of Police Arun K said in a press statement that a marital dispute arose between Sinan and Noorunissa, residents of Perne under Uppinangady police station limits, during a phone call on the afternoon of September 19. He said that in her anger, Noorunissa threw her roughly three-and-a-half-year-old daughter and her husband’s nephew, approximately three years old into a well close to their residence.
The boy, identified as Mohammed Rabih, drowned. Her daughter, Aliya, was pulled from the well and taken to a hospital in Mangaluru for treatment.
Police said the incident occurred around 2 pm, during a phone conversation between Noorunissa and her husband Sinan, a mechanic working in Mangaluru, which escalated into an argument.
The couple has been married for five years and have two children, including a three-month-old infant.
The complaint was filed by Noorunissa’s father-in-law, Aboobakkar M. According to the FIR, she had reported frequent headaches following the birth of her second child and had been having disagreements with her husband over minor issues.
A case has been registered against Noorunissa under Sections 103 (murder) and 109 (attempted murder) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
