High drama unfolded on Bengaluru’s Magadi Road on Wednesday night after a group of locals allegedly attacked several men and damaged their car, suspecting they were attempting to kidnap a young woman.
The situation took a dramatic turn when the woman intervened and told the crowd that the men were her family members, including her father, who had travelled from Rajasthan to take her back home.
The woman later told police that she had married a man from another caste despite opposition from her family. She alleged that her relatives had recently traced her to Bengaluru and were trying to force her to return to Rajasthan.
“I’ve married a man from another caste and my family was against it. Recently, we came here and my family somehow followed me,” she told police.
The confrontation left six people injured, including a nine-year-old girl. One woman who suffered serious head injuries was shifted to the ICU of a nearby private hospital, police said.
According to officials, the family members allegedly tried to leave the spot after the confrontation, ramming into other vehicles as they attempted to flee. Their car was subsequently badly damaged after the crowd attacked it.
A senior police officer said the woman was being urged to file a complaint against her family so that appropriate action could be taken. Police have detained the suspected family members and seized the vehicle allegedly used in the attempted abduction.
Police said no case had been registered in connection with the incident so far, as they continued to ascertain exactly what happened and establish the circumstances surrounding the confrontation.
