A tanker carrying around 28 tonnes of benzene developed a leak near Mysore Colony on Mahul Road in Chembur East on Monday evening, prompting authorities to cordon off a 500-metre area as a precautionary measure.

The leak was reported at around 8pm near the Monorail station, according to the civic authorities. Emergency teams immediately launched measures to contain the situation and safely transfer the chemical from the affected tanker.

As part of the operation, the benzene was decanted into an empty tanker. The process was completed successfully, after which both tankers were moved to the BPCL refinery premises.

The 500-metre perimeter around the incident site will remain restricted until the tankers are safely cleared from the area. Traffic has also been diverted to minimise risks to motorists and local residents while the shifting operation is completed.

Security arrangements have been strengthened around the affected area as a precautionary measure.

No injuries have been reported so far.
