NEW DELHI: Two MLAs were among several people injured after a car crashed through a road divider and collided with an SUV at the ITO traffic signal in Delhi on Sunday night, police said.

The accident took place around 9:30 pm near the PWD office, in front of the old Police Headquarters. According to police, a Swift travelling from Laxmi Nagar towards ITO lost control, hit the road divider and crossed the railing into the opposite lane, where it collided with an Innova heading towards Laxmi Nagar.

The Swift was being driven by 32-year-old Ashutosh Pandey, who was travelling with his wife and two minor children, police said.

The Innova was carrying Anil Jha, the sitting MLA from Delhi’s Kirari assembly constituency, and Karnataka MLA Abhay Patil.

“Today, at about 9:30 PM, a PCR call regarding a road traffic accident was received at PS I.P. Estate,” Delhi Police said.

A preliminary inquiry indicated that the Swift lost control near the PWD office before crashing into the SUV.

All those involved in the accident sustained minor injuries and were taken to Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Hospital. They were reported to be in stable condition, police said.

The collision caused extensive damage to the front of the Innova. Fire brigade personnel were also called to the spot to assist in removing the damaged vehicles and clearing the road to restore traffic movement.
