A 26-year-old police constable was found dead inside the restroom of the L B Nagar Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) office in Hyderabad early Wednesday, with police initially treating the incident as a suspected suicide. However, the constable’s family has raised allegations of foul play and demanded a thorough investigation.
The constable, who was attached to the ACP office for e-COPS duty, was working a night shift when his body was found hanging in the restroom at around 2.30 am. Fellow personnel rushed him to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival.
Police said the constable was from Bandalemuru village in Ranga Reddy district and lived with friends in Karmanghat, close to the station. Officials said there were no apparent signs of personal or family-related problems and that he had attended duty on Tuesday without reporting any difficulties.
His body was sent to Osmania General Hospital for a post-mortem examination, and a case of suspicious death was registered. Senior police officials also visited the station to examine the circumstances surrounding the death.
The incident triggered protests outside the police station after the constable’s family and villagers arrived. Some protesters allegedly entered the station and damaged a computer and printer, following which additional police personnel were deployed to control the situation.
The constable’s father rejected the possibility of suicide, pointing to alleged bloodstains in the restroom and demanding an explanation from the police. His mother also alleged that her son may have been tortured and questioned the absence of CCTV footage in the room, the status of his phone and the circumstances in which his body was discovered.
Ibrahimpatnam MLA Malreddy Ranga Reddy also visited the police station and met the grieving family. Police are investigating the circumstances of the death, while the post-mortem findings are expected to provide further clarity.
