The Indian-American community in Boston is set to celebrate India’s 80th Independence Day with a grand parade and cultural festivities on August 9, showcasing India’s rich heritage and the growing friendship between India and the United States.
Organised by the Foundation of Indian-Americans (FIA) New England, the 5th International India Day Parade is expected to be one of the largest Independence Day celebrations in the New England region. This year’s theme, “Festival of Freedom & US-India Friendship,” highlights the shared values of democracy, diversity, and international cooperation.
The celebration will feature 15 colourful floats, cultural performances, community exhibits, a marketplace, and a Festival of Indian Cuisine, bringing together thousands of participants from across the region. Veterans, first responders, and various community organisations will also take part in the event.
The parade will honour Colonel Inder Preet Singh and US Navy Intelligence Specialist Maggie Lehman as Grand Marshals for their distinguished service. Raghuram Sastry, the first Consul General of India in Boston, will attend the event as the Chief Guest, marking another milestone in strengthening India–US relations.
Adding to the celebrations, Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey has proclaimed August 15, 2026, as “India Day” in the state for the fifth consecutive year, recognising the valuable contributions of the Indian-American community.
The festivities will begin with a flag-hoisting ceremony followed by music, dance performances, cultural showcases, and community activities, reflecting the vibrant spirit of India’s Independence Day while celebrating the close ties between the two nations.
