A third-year BTech student of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati lost her life after accidentally falling into the Brahmaputra River near Lathia Bagicha Ghat on Saturday evening, police said.

According to officials, the student had gone to the riverside with another student when both accidentally slipped into the river. Local sailors rushed to the spot and began rescue efforts before teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) joined the operation.

One of the students was rescued within about 20 minutes of the incident. However, after nearly three hours of intensive search operations, rescuers recovered the body of the other student.

In a statement, IIT Guwahati expressed deep sorrow over the tragic loss of its third-year Electronics and Communication Engineering (ECE) student and extended condolences to her family.

The institute said police are conducting a formal investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident. Additional Superintendent of Police (Kamrup), Kalyan Pathak, confirmed that an inquiry is underway but did not disclose the identity of the deceased.

Authorities are continuing their investigation to determine the exact sequence of events leading to the accident.
