The flood situation in Assam showed signs of improvement on Thursday, but the death toll rose to 80 after two more people lost their lives in flood-related incidents, according to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA).
Both fatalities were reported from Sivasagar district, where a boy and another person drowned in floodwaters during the past 24 hours.
The latest ASDMA report said that more than 2.12 lakh people remain affected across Charaideo, Golaghat, Jorhat, and Sivasagar districts. Charaideo is the worst-hit district with nearly 80,000 affected residents, followed by Sivasagar (71,000) and Jorhat (40,000). The number of affected people has declined from over three lakh reported a day earlier.
Relief and rescue operations are continuing, with the administration operating 112 relief camps and distribution centres, currently sheltering over 75,500 people. Rescue efforts are being carried out by the Army, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), Fire and Emergency Services, police, and other civil agencies.
During the last 24 hours, authorities distributed essential relief materials, including rice, pulses, salt, and mustard oil, to affected families.
According to ASDMA, 437 villages remain submerged, while more than 17,198 hectares of agricultural land have been damaged. Floodwaters have also affected roads, bridges, embankments, and other public infrastructure across the state.
The Dhansiri River continues to flow above the danger mark at Numaligarh, while nearly 2.97 lakh domestic animals and poultry have also been impacted by the floods.
