The case against a trainee Indian Police Service (IPS) officer accused of sexually assaulting a fellow probationer at the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy (SVPNPA) has escalated, with Hyderabad police adding charges of rape and attempt to murder.
The accused, a 33-year-old IPS probationer, was arrested on Tuesday night and produced before a court on Wednesday. He has been remanded to 14 days of judicial custody and shifted to Chanchalguda Central Prison after a medical examination at Osmania General Hospital.
The new charges were added based on the statement of the 30-year-old complainant and preliminary investigation. Police invoked Section 64(1) (rape) and Section 109 (attempt to murder) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), along with other relevant provisions.
According to investigators, the complainant’s medical examination reportedly found strangulation marks on her neck and an abrasion on her shin, which police said provided prima facie support to her allegations.
The officer had already been booked on charges related to sexual harassment, stalking, voyeurism, outraging the modesty of a woman, physical assault, criminal intimidation, and invasion of privacy.
Police said the two officers first connected through Instagram in mid-2025 after the complainant responded to one of the accused’s posts about his journey into the IPS. According to the police, the relationship later became abusive, with allegations of emotional manipulation, repeated threats of self-harm, intimidation using weapons, harassment, demands for multiple relationships, and damage to the complainant’s laptop.
Investigators said the woman eventually ended the relationship and later married another person due to the accused’s alleged behaviour.
The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are continuing to gather evidence. The allegations remain subject to judicial proceedings, and the accused is entitled to due process under the law.
