A search operation by security forces in Manipur’s Noney district turned violent on Wednesday, leaving one person dead and five others injured, including two CRPF personnel, officials said.
The gunfight broke out in Bitiang village during a joint search operation carried out by security forces. Among the injured, three civilians were shifted to Noney District Hospital, while the injured CRPF personnel, reportedly from the CoBRA (Commando Battalion for Resolute Action) unit, were taken to a CRPF camp in Imphal. Officials are yet to release details about their condition.
The operation coincided with a shutdown called by a Naga organisation, protesting an alleged commando action against village volunteers in the ethnic violence-affected district.
According to officials, a joint security team, assisted by dog squads, continued the search operation until 4 p.m., but no arrests were made. A case has been registered at Khoupum Police Station, and an investigation is underway.
Local residents claimed the encounter began when a CRPF commando unit conducted an operation at a Naga Village Guard (NVG) training camp in Bitiang.
Following the incident, authorities deployed additional security forces, including the Rapid Action Force (RAF) and Manipur Police, to maintain law and order in the area.
Meanwhile, the Working Committee of the Joint Tribes Council-Manipur, which organized the shutdown across Naga-inhabited areas, alleged that the CRPF launched an “unprovoked” operation and accused the force of acting in collusion with the Zeliangrong United Front-Jenchui (ZUF-J) insurgent outfit. Security agencies have not responded to these allegations.
The situation in the area remains tense, with security personnel maintaining a strong presence as investigations continue.
