India continued its impressive campaign at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow on Day 6, adding two silver medals to its tally while its boxing contingent guaranteed three more medals by securing semifinal berths.

Long-distance runner Gulveer Singh and weightlifter Harjinder Kaur led the day’s performances, as Indian athletes also competed across athletics, swimming, para sports, boxing and lawn bowls.

Gulveer, Harjinder strike silver

The day’s biggest highlights came from athletics and weightlifting.

Gulveer Singh created history by becoming the first Indian to win a Commonwealth Games medal in the men’s 10,000m, claiming silver with a time of 27:49.78. Staying with the lead pack throughout the race, Gulveer produced a strong finishing sprint but settled behind Australia’s Ky Robinson.

Harjinder Kaur also secured a silver medal in the women’s 69kg weightlifting event with a total lift of 227kg, improving on the bronze medal she won at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games.

Three more medals assured in boxing

India’s boxers continued their excellent run as Jadumani Singh, Preeti Pawar and Priya Ghanghas all advanced to the semifinals with convincing quarterfinal victories, guaranteeing themselves at least bronze medals.

  • Jadumani Singh defeated Zambia’s Mwengo Mwale in the men’s 55kg quarterfinal.
  • Preeti Pawar outclassed Nicole Clyde of Northern Ireland in the women’s 54kg quarterfinal.
  • Priya Ghanghas overcame Scotland’s Niamh Mitchell in the women’s 60kg quarterfinal.

There was disappointment for Kapil Pokhariya, who exited the men’s 90kg competition after losing to Scotland’s Robert McNulty, while Parveen Hooda bowed out following her defeat to England’s Sacha Hickey in the women’s 65kg quarterfinal.

Mixed fortunes in athletics and swimming

In athletics, Vishal TK qualified for the men’s 400m semifinals, while Rajesh Ramesh failed to progress beyond the heats. Young high jumper Pooja Singh also missed out on a podium finish.

In the pool, Srihari Nataraj reached the men’s 100m backstroke semifinal but finished sixth in his race, missing out on a place in the final. Veteran swimmer Sajan Prakash finished 28th overall in the men’s 50m butterfly heats and did not qualify for the semifinals.

Weightlifting setback, lawn bowls boost

India also suffered a setback in weightlifting as Nirupama Devi Seram recorded a Did Not Finish (DNF) in the women’s 63kg event after failing to complete a successful clean and jerk lift.

Meanwhile, the lawn bowls pairing of Dinesh Kumar and Navneet Singh kept India’s medal hopes alive by defeating the Cook Islands in the men’s pairs sectional match.
