DHAKA: Complaints have been filed with Bangladesh’s International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) against former President Mohammed Shahabuddin, seeking an investigation into his alleged role in “crimes against humanity” during the 2024 uprising against the Sheikh Hasina government.
The allegations relate to the same events for which former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was sentenced to death in absentia.
Shahabuddin, a longtime ally of Hasina, resigned from the presidency citing health complications.
Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed said the opposition, including the National Citizen Party, had raised allegations against Shahabuddin but added that the government had found no evidence warranting further consideration.
Law Minister Mohammad Asaduzzaman said, however, that Shahabuddin would be investigated over separate corruption allegations.
ICT Chief Prosecutor Md. Aminul Islam confirmed that his office had received two complaints—one from the Bangladesh Azad Party and another from the Rastrosonglap Forum.
“I have not yet gone through the complaints,” Islam said.
Rastrosonglap Forum Central Member Secretary Al Nur Mohammad Ayash alleged that Shahabuddin, in his capacity as president at the time, had a role in the killings, torture and other crimes committed against students and protesters during the 2024 uprising.
