At least five people were killed and 21 others injured after two earthquakes struck Peru’s mountainous Junín region on Saturday night, according to the country’s civil defence authorities.
The quakes, measuring 5.1 and 3.7 in magnitude, hit Chupaca province, around 300 km east of Lima, at depths of 24 km and 18 km, respectively. The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre initially estimated the first quake at magnitude 5.6.
Officials said around 48 homes were destroyed and 18 damaged, affecting nearly 300 residents, many of whom have been provided temporary shelter. Rescue teams and firefighters continue to clear debris amid fears that more victims may be trapped.
Peru, located along the Pacific Ring of Fire, is one of the world’s most earthquake-prone countries due to its high level of seismic activity.
